Those who follow fashion closely must have noticed a slight, soft shift in Rihanna's look. Gone are the denim thongs and the bleached bobs, and it looks like the gorgeous singer's fashion icon for 2014 is… Michelle Obama? Sporting new long hair extensions and a fresh-faced look, Rihanna was spotted recently more covered than ever and less gangsta than usual. The face of Balmain stepped out in a crisp Altuzarra look to attend Roc Nation’s pre-Grammy party, looking refined and polished in pinstripes and white. Sure, plenty of leg was on display, but the overall styling was tame and tasteful in Rihanna's standards.
Then it was time for the ultimate lady-like moment – Chanel! The singer channeled the French label in a cute orange suit on Good Morning America, where she appeared promoting her latest collaboration with M.A.C. Viva Glam (by the way, when you purchase a lipstick from the collection the M.A.C cashier girls ring a huge bell and yell "Viva!". True story). The finishing accord to this classy symphony was the outfit Rihanna wore to visit M.A.C.’s Soho store - a purple metallic blazer, a structured skirt and a blouse, all by Lanvin (another French powerhouse famous for its demure style). This trick is not the newest in the book – Lady Gaga, who's still striving for a legitimate comeback, did the bag-girl-gone-good before, and so did Miley Cyrus, for a brief moment, with the help of Marc Jacobs.
The difference is that Rihanna actually looks genuinely happy with the grown-up, sophisticated direction her stylists are taking her. It all works – the hair, the smile, the lean long lines and the designer twist. Indeed, Rihanna proves she's a badass again – but this time, without showing her actual ass.
